Hookah Lounges in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City does not have a hookah lounge scene in the way Denver or Las Vegas do, and the reason is legal rather than cultural. In 2012 Utah added hookah to its Indoor Clean Air Act, the law that bans smoking in enclosed public places, and allowed only lounges that already met a narrow test on 1 January 2012 to keep serving under an exemption. That exemption became permanent in 2017, but no new hookah lounge has been able to open indoors since. No dedicated hookah lounge is currently listed on shisha.com in the city. The scene that does exist is retail, and it is well reviewed. Salt City Smoke at 805 South 900 West, which traded as House of Hookahs until a rename, stocks shisha tobacco and pipes and stays open until 11 PM, later than most shops in the valley. House of Hookahs itself still runs on Redwood Road, open until 9 PM, and a third shop on 5600 West in West Valley City is the best rated of the three at 4.6 across 267 reviews. Utah's tobacco purchase age has been 21 since July 2021.

Because Salt Lake City hookah happens at home, the etiquette here is about buying well rather than ordering well. The shops stock the same brands you would find on a lounge menu, with mint, double apple and grape the safe first picks and Al Fakher the name reviewers mention most at Salt City Smoke. Ask staff to match a bowl and coals to the pipe you own, since the wrong coal size is the most common reason a home session tastes harsh. If you are visiting from out of state and expecting a lounge, plan for Denver or Las Vegas instead; nothing in the valley can legally seat you with a pipe unless it holds one of the rare pre-2012 exemptions.
