We ordered takeout from Shish Kebab House of Afghanistan, and the experience was interesting in a good way. The restaurant has a unique setup, a cocktail bar, dine‑in area, and a hookah lounge all connected. It was a bit surprising to see a halal restaurant with a full cocktail bar inside, but the ambiance overall was warm and culturally rich. The bar area is beautifully decorated with Afghan rugs, pottery, and artwork, including photos of past Afghan presidents, which adds a nice touch of heritage. One thing to note: if you’re elderly or have mobility challenges, there are quite a few stairs, stairs to enter, stairs to reach the dining area, and even stairs to some of the tables. I did notice an elevator, but it was closed during my visit. I took a quick peek at the hookah lounge; it looked okay but definitely has room for improvement in terms of atmosphere and layout. As for the food, it was good, not mind‑blowing, but certainly above average. We tried the Kabuli Pulao, Beef Kebab, Chicken Kebab, and Bowlani. Everything was nicely prepared and flavorful, just not exceptional. Still, it’s a solid spot if you’re craving Afghan cuisine. Overall, a culturally vibrant place with decent food and a unique mix of spaces. Worth trying at least once.

Had an amazing meal. The food was absolutely delicious, full of flavour, and freshly made. Every dish we tried was tasty and well prepared. The service was friendly and welcoming too. Highly recommend this place if you are looking for really good food.

Tried this place for dinner and the food was really good! For starters, we had the Bowlani and Mantoo—both perfect for sharing between two. For mains, we tried the chicken kabab, chicken shammi, and beef shammi along with Kabuli pulau. The chicken shammi was definitely the star—soft, succulent, and full of flavor. The beef shammi was a bit dry and tough, but overall the dishes were enjoyable. Ended the meal with rice pudding, which was the perfect finish. The ambience, however, felt a little dated and dimly lit, and the dining area was empty when we visited, making the experience very quiet. Not sure if it gets livelier on weekends, but I’d definitely return for the food!

Well-established. They know what they're doing, the wait staff is on point and attentive. The drinks and cocktails are good. Service is incredible. Dishes are sort of hit or miss though. A few things off the menu were stellar but a few things are very toned down in terms of seasoning and spice. maybe to accommodate the local palette. Kebabs are hard to do well. Like many kebab places things like chicken and beef cuts tend to be overcooked and sort of hard. Overall, it's a great place to go for a group dinner because of the vibe, great service, and decent food priced well for that area. But there are a lot of other stand-out Middle Eastern restaurants in Connecticut that focus more on the flavor.

This restaurant is wonderful! Terrific food, great service and an outstanding menu. The three of us got different things and shared and there wasn't a dish we didn't like. We will be back again and again because it is so good.
